The Columbus Dispatch article about land for sale in Worthington "Prime Property for Sale in Worthington is BIG NEWS. The Columbus Dispatch says "The United Methodist Children’s Home for troubled youth, opened almost a century ago as an orphanage, is for sale."
The website of UMCH Family Services says of the land on Hight Street in Worthington:
"As a ministry of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Children's Home began as an orphanage, originally contracting land upon which we ultimately build our Worthington, Ohio campus in 1911." on their history page.
United Methodist Children's Home land for sale in Worthington
The Columbus Dispatch article says the money raised by the sale of the property owned by the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church will be used to create an "endowment to support adoption, foster-care and family mental-health services." An October 10, 2011 Press Release from the UMCH Family Services gives more detail about the news that the land is for sale and what it will mean for this minstry of the United Methodist Church. The .pdf press release document tells what land in the area owned by the church will not be sold.
I often wondered why the owner of the property did not sell the land. Even before recent troubles for the United Methodist Children’s Home, as I was showing in residential neighborhoods near by I wondered why the owner would hang onto it. It is big and did not seem to be used to it's potential. I thought it had to be very valuable land for redevelopment.
How much will this land right on High Street sell for? The the interim executive director of the The United Methodist Children’s Home is quoted in the Columbus Dispatch saying he's been told a value of "$8 million to $10 million."
Land for sale in Worthington
According to the Columbus Dispatch article the United Methodist Children’s Home land is 38 acres. The land on High St. is surrounded by residential areas, Worthington Estates and Worthingway.
How prime is this prime property? The October 12, 2011 Columbus Dispatch article written by Dean Narciso also says: “Having the (nearby I-270) interchange greatly enhances the property,” said Robert Weiler, chairman of the Weiler Co., a local developer. “I would consider it one of the best addresses in the county. Even in this market, you’re going to have a lot of interest.”
The Worthington Comprehensive plan allows for commercial or residential development of the property.
