Worthington - October 24, 1938
Don O'Brien identifies his photo as "Fund Raising at Corn Husking Contest" on Flickr and says this was October 24, 1938. He says candy bars cost 5 cents.
He also identifies the event as taking place at the Walter Williams farm on Galena Road at the juncture with E. Wilson Bridge Road.
Map - the intersection of Worthington Galena and E. Wilson Bridge Road today. There are businesses on the north-side of E. Wilson Bridge Road backing to 270 now. Wonder if there was a Huntley Road back then. East of the junction of Worthington Galena Road and E. Wilson Bridge is the Budweiser brewery now.
I wonder whether the Walter Williams farm was on the east or west side of Galena Road or both.
Are today's McCord Park, The Chiller, the Worthington Recreation Center on land that was once the Walter Williams farm? Are Worthington Estates East and nearby residential areas on what was the Walter Williams farm back in 1938?
Another photo from Mr. O'Brien of the 1938 Franklin County agricultural event is titled "Starting Gun at a Corn Husking Contest."

Maureen thanks for sharing this. I really love to look back at old photos and I love the black and white prints. Just one photo can get you thinking about how life was, and peek your curiosity to find out how much the present landscape changed over the years.
On the top picture on Flickr someone commented the girl in the middle is his grandmother. I hope more people who grew up in Worthington find one another and show off their old photos.
Hi Maureen... I love your historic photos posts. I just find the pictures to be such an interesting glimpse back in time. And it doesn't hurt that I remember just enough about Columbus geography to vaguely know where you are talking about!

Great old photos. I never get tired of looking at the stories they tell.
It can be a lot of fun looking back at old pictures. We have many old sepia photos and a few tin photos that are interesting of grand parents and family.
Candy bars must have been a "good buy" for decades...Movies on Saturday afternoon for a quarter meant admission AND 2 candy bars....I heard someone say that about the early '60's....not that I remember of course.

There is something special about old photographs; whether they are color or not, the black and white ones seem to capture a truer contrast. The starting gun picture is superb.
