Old Worthington Business District in 1938 or 1939
I don't like the e on the end of the old in "Old Worthington", that is how the Worthington business association spells it, Olde Worthington. The residential area surrounding the businesses on High Street is called Old Worthington, I am using it for all of it.
Another old picture from Don O'Brien who grew up in Worthington. If you have an interest in Worthington History you have to visit his photos on Flickr for pictures of Worthington in the 1930s and 1940s.

The sign on the corner says: Free Parking. I am trying to figure out what corner this is.
O'Brien says Home Market, a grocery store in the photo. I wish I knew what the Home Market's address was. I looked at the old ad to see if there was an address. O'Brien shared an old ad via Flickr from Home Market. Fun to see the pricing.

Other businesses O'Brien identified in the photo include "Eicher Insurance, Johnson Hardware, Conklin Restaurant, Buell Drygoods" On Flickr O'Brien also says the telephone operators were above Home Market. I can read the sign on Home Market if I look at the largest version of the photo on Flickr. Home Market is the building the car across the street is in front of. The upstairs has awnings on the windows.

I love time tunnels...great cars on this street!
He was such a boy, all the pictures of his Streets of Worthington series on Flickr are pictures of cars... I like the cars but I am trying to see the buildings behind to figure out where the photos were taken. Some he will say what street it is. Some I can see exactly in the background where it is.
This you really don't need to say it is High Street... that is all there was or is. Very little business on the side streets.
He was such a shutterbug too and he is going strong on Flickr. He added a photo of his 6th grade teacher to Flickr yesterday.
Maureen, this was a fun post to read. I hope that some of your Worthington readers can help you solve the mystery. And yeah! The cars are great.
Maureen I love to see what a placed looked like years ago and how is has since transformed. Most of all I liked talking to someone who has lived in both periods and is kind enough to share the history. Here is hoping someone will help you fill in the gap on Worthington.
Hi Maureen... I love olde (yeah, the "e" looks weird) photos like this one. They provide a glimpse into the past while the structures photgraphed in them often provide a sense of familiarity if they are (or more recently were) still standing.

This actually looks like Oakville in the 30's. I love history and seeing old photos. And our downtown area is actually called Olde Oakville.
that was me from my cell phone, not signed in obviously by CA I meant Canada not California. The e sounds English to me and I think of people in Canada being more English than we are. And having a more English sounding accent than us.
The e makes me think of "Jolly olde England..."
Worthington was settled by people from New England. Their ancestry was probably mostly English, so maybe the e is appropriate.
The Worthington Green is a "New England" influence.... High Street, the business district is really pretty mid-western like lots of small towns in Ohio. High Street in Worthington is pretty similar in lots of ways to High St. in Dublin, State Street in Westerville. It is in the original village of Worthington which is now a neighborhood referred to as Old Worthington. The merchants association for the business district in the city of Worthington uses an e... Olde Worthington.
Occasionally listings for homes in Old Worthington get put in MLS as Olde Worthington...
We have a subdivision whose name is Olde Sawmill. Legally.
