I went to the Patriot Day 2009 - Observance on the Village Green in Worthington today.
Worthington City Council President Lou Goorey talked about the days when you remember where you were when you heard....
Pearl Harbor was attacked
JFK was assasinated
He referred to the Space Challenger Shuttle Disaster I thought at first I did not remember it. Trying to remember while writing this of course I remember living in Akron on January 28, 1986. Christa McAulife, the teacher was one of the crew. Judith Resnick the other female crew member was from Akron. I was not watching when it exploded but I remember it being on the news nationally and locally because Resnick grew up in Akron, Firestone Park High I believe.
When the September 11 attacks happened.
September 11, 2001 when the first plane flew into the World Trade Center I was getting coffee in the kitchen at the HER REALTORS® office at 6902 N. High St. but one of the staff told me to go upstairs to the meeting room because they had the television on and that a plane had hit a building in New York City. I pictured a little propeller plane.
We were all watching together when the second plane hit.
I may have gone to the Patriot Day Observance every year now. I am not sure. I know I went to the first Patriot Day on the Village Green in Worthington on September 11, 2002.
2003?
2004?
I started blogging in 2005 in late August just before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. There's no sign of any of that but my blog... it's a blog about Central Ohio. I know I would look at the news then make myself try to work on my blog and not get obsessed with the news.
No sign on my blog about two weeks later of what would have been the third Worthington Patriot Day Observation of September 11.
Before September 11, 2006 I mention the Patriot Day Observation on the Worthington Green. I find nothing on September 11, 2007.
September 11, 2009 - Patriot Day
The man in front of me had a Pearl Harbor tee shirt on under the flag and the date of Pearl Harbor and the message "Remember Pearl Harbor" someone wrote in marker.
"Remember September 11"
The Worthington Mayor spoke, the Worthington Police Chief and Fire Chieft talked...
When Major Chris Call of the was introduced I immediately scanned the crowd for his mother. I'd forgot his first name and had no idea he was in the military. His mother was there but I was unable to tell from her facial expression if this was her son. I was pretty sure though from their expressions that his wife and daughter were sitting next to her. When Call said he grew up in Riverlea, I knew his mother. I probably met him about 17 years ago....
