W. Wilson Bridge Rd. in Worthington, the way it was

A photo of W. Wilson Bridge Rd. in Worthington in 1937...

W. Wilson Bridge Road, Worthington, Ohio 1937

A photo of W. Wilson Bridge Road in Sharon Township in 1937. As Don O'Brien who took the photo of his friend and his brother says at the time, W. Wilson Bridge was not in the Worthington Corporation at the time... it was years before the area was annexed to the city of Worthington. I am guessing the mailing address for W. Wilson Bridge at the time would have been Worthington, Ohio?

The photo is of course, not of W. Wilson Bridge Road!  The photo was taken in 1937 of his friend, his brother and the O'Brien family's dog "Chink."  W. Wilson Bridge Rd., a country road with telephone lines is just the back drop.

Worthington including Old Worthington is the back drop for a lot of Don O'Brien's photos.  It is funny how many of his photos were of the cars on High Street. What a boy!  He went to school in Worthington.  If you look at his present day photos on Flickr many of Don O'Brien's photos are of old cars.

Worthington, Ohio: October 24, 1938

 Worthington Ohio Corn Husking 1938

Worthington, Ohio October 24, 1938  - corn husking

A photo from a farm on the east side of Worthington in 1938.  Don O'Brien (Dok1 on Flickr) took the photo at a corn husking. This photo is of the starting gun at the corn husking.

Mr. O'Brien identifies the event as taking place at the Walter Williams farm on Galena Road at the juncture with E. Wilson Bridge Road.

A map of that area today:

Map - the intersection of Worthington Galena and E. Wilson Bridge Road today.  It is not rural now.  There are businesses on the north-side of E. Wilson Bridge Road backing to 270 now. Wonder if there was a Huntley Road back in 1938?  Now east of the junction of Worthington Galena Road and E. Wilson Bridge is the Budweiser brewery.  The Wilson Bridge Corridor in  Worthington Ohio is just south of 270.

It's been a number of years since there'd be a corn husking in the Worthington area.

The photo is of girls selling candy at the corn husking.  Five cents for a candy bar?

Worthington Ohio 1938

Recycling is good? Worthington - October 24, 1938  The same photos in a post in 2009 about the same corn husking.  I believe Don O'Brien has at least one more photo of the day.   He has lots of photos from the 1930s and 1940s Worthington, it's worth a visit to his Flickr photostream. Don O'Brien (dok1)  grew up on W. Wilson Bridge Road. There is lots of Worthington history on his Flickr photostream. Many of Don O'Brien's photos are licensed with a Creative Commons license which allows commercial use.

Shops at Worthington Place: Ground Breaking news!

The Shops at Worthington Place had their Ground Breaking Ceremony today. I went.  I sweated.  I listened.  They announced new tenants!   Coming soon to The Shops at Worthington Place:

  • Panera Bread
  • Johnson's Ice Cream
  • Swan Cleaners

Swan Cleaners was the first tenant when the Worthington shopping center was built in the 1970s?

Groundbreaking Ceremony Shops at Worthington Place

Tom Carter is the one without a hardhat.  He has one in earlier photos...  he was putting one on in the series of action photos I took of the shoveling  Ground Breaking ceremony at Shops at Worthington Place.

The area between the Kroger store and the shops is going to be green space?  A park like place that people will want to be!

New and existing tenants at The Shops at Worthington Place

They talked about another tenant that they had wanted to announce, so soon there should be someone else coming soon to the mall on W. Willson Bridge Road that is being revamped, and renamed to the Shops at Worthington Place.   Tom Carter talked about the tenants they have that are doing well including Talbots. They are remodeling the Talbot's store in the mall previously known as "Worthington Square" and "the Worthington Mall."  I think those were the names.

I went into Talbot's store...  and the sales associates told me they are actually moving to the south, where Talbot's for Men was.

After the Ground Breaking ceremony I saw this sign inside the mall.  Shops at Worthington Place Ground Breaking event sign

"dish the dirt about our exciting new plans!"   The website for The Shops at Worthington Place is ShopWorthingtonPlace.com

They (The Shops at Worthington Place) are on Facebook and Twitter and asked the crowd to follow them on social media too.

The Shops at Worthington Place

Worthington MallWorthington Square Mall is now named

The Shops at Worthington Place

Their new website is

http://www.shopworthingtonplace.com/

A press release, dated May 10, 2011 for the mall formerly known as Worthington Square says:

Worthington Square’s new owners have big plans to make the 138,000 square foot mixed-use retail center the “place” to be, announcing today a new name for the center, The Shops at Worthington Place (www.ShopWorthingonPlace.com).

I was just there Sunday...  an interesting thing about the renderings for the new place for relaxing, shopping and restaurants are the people in the renderings. Not that the mall on W. Wlson Bridge Rd in Worthington is dead.  You see plenty of people at First Watch on Sunday morning. There were a couple of people shopping at Talbot's... late, late, late Sunday afternoon when I stopped in.

I have a photo somewhere of Worthington Square on Christmas Eve 2010 ... very short wait to see Santa Claus.

An article in the Columbus Dispatch says a new Shops at Worthington Place sign will be up later this year.

Christmas Morning in Worthington - Winter is colorful, after all.

Christmas Morning in Worthington Ohio 1928

Worthington Christmas 1928

Don O'Brien and his younger brother David on Christmas morning in 1928, in one of black and white photos he shares on Flickr.   Actually their house on W. Wilson Bridge Road was north of Worthington.  The house at 130 W. Wilson Bridge Rd. was out in the country north of the Village of Worthington in the 1920s. The Village of Worthington, what is now called "Old Worthington" was from North St. to South St. and Morning St. to Evening St., West Wilson Bridge Rd. was way out in the country in Sharon Township.  In the 1930s at least W. Wilson Bridge Road was in the Worthington school district of the time, there was a Sharon Township school district too.

On his Flickr page on this and another Christmas 1928 photo, Mr. O'Brien describes the flash powder used to take the indoor photos.  They had to open the windows to clear the smoke after the photos were taken.

Look at those toys!  I tried last year to find something on Delko Dumper or Delko Wagons but was not able to.  See the Tinker Toy container on the right?

Another Christmas Morning with the O'Brien family?  Christmas Morning 1935 - Don O'Brien got his first camera. This photo is "All Rights Reserved" it is one of my favorites on Flickr.  Don O'Brien has a great collection of his own photos of Worthington Ohio from the 1930s and 1940s.

Christmas in Worthington Ohio 1928 - Winter is colorful, after all

I wondered if there was snow on the ground on Christmas morning 1928.  From his father's diary describing their Sharon Township Property at 130 W. Wilson Bridge Rd.:

"Wandering around outdoors in the bright, snappy air this afternoon, I looked at the Euonymus patens or spreading euonymus, the Viburnum rhytididiphyllum and the Oregon hollygrape, each green in the shrub border. Berries still cling to the highbush cranberry, some of the cotoneasters and the barberry. Many of the rock garden plants not yet covered were still green and fresh. Winter is colorful, after all."

just  part of a commment that Mr. O'Brien (Dok1 on Flickr) added last year to the photo of him and his brother on Christmas 1928.  O'Brien's father wrote a column for Better Homes and Gardens magazine and wrote extensively for Country Gentleman, a magazine for farmers.  The father's diary tells about Christmas Eve preparation for Donald and David's Christmas morning, what he got for Christmas 1928 and about a walk outside, "Winter is colorful, after all."    The photo of the O'Brien brothers in front of their Christmas tree in 1928 is linked to the photo, so you can read more of what Don O'Brien shares from his father's diary.

Worthington School Bus 1938

The Christmas Morning 1928 photo is part of Don O'Brien's Flickr Photostream - Dok1.  Just today Mr. O'Brien  added to Flickr a photo of himself on Christmas 1933, with his main gift, a desk.  A few days ago he shared a card his mother made for Christmas 1930.  The photo of Christmas Morning 1928 is licensed with a Creative Commons license which allows me to use it here.

Worthington Square Mall

TheWorthington Mall Columbus Dispatch says the sale of the Worthington Square Mall is final.  The mall on W. Wilson Bridge Rd. sold for approximately $6.5 Million according to  Marla Matzer Rose's article titled "Mall's new owner ready to make big changes "

Big changes like tearing off the roof....  or part of the roof.  The rendering in Columbus Business First was interesting. The Dispatch article talks about making the exterior of the "enclosed  mall more walkable."  That will work if the whole Wilson Bridge Corridor rework goes anywhere.   Offices, businesses to walk to Worthington Square from.

The malls new owners are Tom Carter of Worthington, and partners. They plan to invest $10 Million in the Worthington Square Mall according to the newspaper article.

The Columbus Dispatch article says of the propored TIF District:

"Three weeks ago, the Worthington City Council voted to support a tax-increment financing (TIF) district that would aid the developers in renovating the property"

The Columbus Dispatch article says Worthington Square Mall hopes to announce two new restaurants early next year.   It's almost early next year now...  Changes in Worthington

Worthington Mall to be bought... by a local

Worthington Mall signA Columbus Dispatch article today says "Worthington Mall to be Sold"

The Dispatch article written by Marla Matzer Rose says there is a buyer for the local mall and it is a local person.  The Columbus Dispatch says:

"Local developer Tom Carter and Morris Capital Partners of Texas announced a plan yesterday to buy the mall."

It sounds like the mall originally built in 1974 is going to be opened up...  it was enclosed at some point.

Carter is quoted about the past...

"bad decisions by previous owners" contributed to the center's woes"

The slide show below was a few years ago... Victoria's Secret and Bath and Body Works were still at Worthington Mall at that point.  Godfry's left, went to Polaris, Acorn is gone.

Hey Worthington who has photos? Worthington Square

Worthington Mall signHey Worthington who has photos of Worthington Square?  Old photos?

From the beginning?

From the early years?

I went on the walk a few weeks ago...  the walk of the Wilson Bridge Road Corridor from the Community Center to Olentany Park... one of the photos I took that day was of the Worthington Mall entrance in July 2010.  That photo must be on my Posterous, Columbus Life... or on ColumbusBestBlog.com

I went to see what Bird Houck came up with Wednesday night (August 4, 2010.)

Who has photos or memories of what the mall in Worthington  was like in the beginning?  Was it called a mall? Or was the word "mall" later?  Was it Worthington Square Shopping Center?

What year was Worthington Square enclosed?

Anyone have photos of what the mall looked like before it was enclosed?

Worthington Mall interior

Know of anyone who would have photos of Worthington Square way back when? I wondered if Don O'Brien would have photos.  Don O'Brien grew up W. Wilson Bridge Rd in the 1930's and 1940s.  His family (he, his wife and children) lived out on Sunbury Road in the 1950s.  Don O'Brien is Dok1 on Flickr.  His old Worthington photos are always interesting. Wilson Bridge Road Corridor

I went on the Wilson Bridge Road Corridor walking tour on Saturday morning... the walk was from the Community Center to the Olentangy Parklands.  The Wilson Bridge Road Corridor which is being studied is from 'rail to river. 'The railroad tracks are just east of the Worthington Community Center.

The river...  the Olentangy is where it has always been.

It was a long hot walk.

It was interesting. In fact it was fascinating...

I do not know much about commercial real estate... office space, the north side of both E. Wilson Bridge and W. Wilson Bridge are mostly office space.  There are very high vacancy rates (welcome to Central Ohio.)

Also on the noth side of E. Wilson Bridge Rd.  MedVet and the Worthington City School District Administration Building.   The south side of Wilson Bridge Rd. is residential.Medvet E. Wilson Bridge Rd. Worthington Ohio 43085  A study of that area is what started it all?

W. Wilson Bridge Rd once you get past the Worthington Mall is more huge office spaces.  The walkers were broken up into groups...  I was in the BEST group... we had a woman who does leasing for one of the large landholders on W. Wilson Bridge in our group.

The next public meeting is on August 4, 2010. Stay tuned to the Worthington.org site for info. I just stumbled on the news of the Wilson Bridge Corridor Walking Tour..  by accident.
