the Delawanda Park neighborhood

Delawanda sign The Delawanda Park neighborhood is in north Columbus near the Delawnda Park and Ride on High St. The Delawanda Park neighborhood is near Delawanda Park, a city of Columbus Park on the Olentangy River... the park named Delawanda Park  is also known as Kenney Park.

Where is Delawanda Park, the neighborhood?  South of Graceland and north of Old Beechwold.  Back in the 1920s and 1930's this area had a Worthington mailing address, it was out in the country... well in Sharon Township.  Did neighborhoods like Delawanda Park, Old Beechwold, Tremont Gardens have Worthington mailing adresses into the 1950s?  or 1960s?

Streets in the Delawanda Park neighborhood include Rathbone, Leland, Girard and .... Milton. Milton is the Delawanda Park neighborhood street I forget.  There is a section of Milton Ave. north from Rathbone Rd. write up to Graceland.  And is there a house on Delawanda Park?  One house?

Not from around these parts?  If Morse Rd. crossed High St, it would be where Rathbone Rd. is.   The Delawanda Park neighborhood north of Ratbone Rd. and the Old Beechwold neighborhood south of Rathbone Rd.   Both Old  Beechwold and the Delawanda Park neighborhood are in the  Clintonville Commission's District 6

If you've heard talk of the Bethel Road connector over the years, either the Delawanda Park neighborhood  or Graceland probably would have been where the connector would have gone through. Will there ever be a connector?  I would have thought 20 years ago that there would be a road connecting "Clintonville" to the northwest side of Columbus.  I don't think there ever will be now.  I will post something about the  Bethel Road connector someday.

The Delawanda

Delawanda Park and RideThe Delawanda was where the Delawanda Park and Ride is today.  The Delawanda was a "tea-room" in the late 20s and early 1930s.  The Delawanda would have been in an unincorporated area, Sharon Township back in the 1920s and 1930s, north of Columbus.  The Delawanda had a Worthington address, the Village of Worthington would have been closer than a Columbus post office at the time?  It makes me wonder if Old Beechwold had a Worthington address in the 1920s and 1930s. The park and ride is north of Rathbone Rd. The Old Beechwold neighborhood is just south of Rathbone Rd.

There is a photo of The Delawanda with family members standing out front on Bleimes Flickr photostream, a collection of family photos.

The Delawanda - Worthington, Ohio

Bleimes on Flickr (a grand daughter of the 5 year old in the photo of The Delawanda with family members out front on High Street) r identifies those in the photo as:

"George R Bleimes, George Bleimes 5, Arko von Ritterschloss (dog), William "Billy" McCarty."  and the building behind them as  "Delawanda Tea Room, Worthington, Ohio. ca 1929. "

The family history by George Bleimes (the 5 year old boy in the photo) says:

"About 1927 mother and grandmother opened a dining establishment in our house that they called a “tea-room” and named it The Delawanda. Seating for customers was in the three front rooms. They had a 12’ X 20’ room added to the back for a kitchen and a first floor lavatory installed."

The Bleimes family history shows the same photo as the one on Flickr, with the family standing in front, with the 'The Delawanda'  sign.  Also another photo straight on and closer up, the first photo in the history shows the house at 4939 N. High St. which was "The Delawanda" a tea-room.
