Big News - Land for sale in Worthington

United Methodist Childrens Home administration building - Worthington Ohio 2011

The Columbus Dispatch article about land for sale in Worthington  "Prime Property for Sale in Worthington is BIG NEWS. The Columbus Dispatch says "The United Methodist Children’s Home for troubled youth, opened almost a century ago as an orphanage, is for sale."

The website of UMCH Family Services says of the land on Hight Street in Worthington:

"As a ministry of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Children's Home began as an orphanage, originally contracting land upon which we ultimately build our Worthington, Ohio campus in 1911."   on their history page.

United Methodist Children's Home land for sale in Worthington

The Columbus Dispatch article says the money raised by the sale of the property owned by the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church will be used to create an "endowment to support adoption, foster-care and family mental-health services."  An October 10, 2011 Press Release from the UMCH Family Services gives more detail about the news that the land is for sale and what it will mean for this minstry of the United Methodist Church.  The .pdf press release document tells what land in the area owned by the church will not be sold.

I often wondered why the owner of the property did not sell the land. Even before recent troubles for the United Methodist Children’s Home, as I was showing in residential neighborhoods near by I wondered why the owner would hang onto it.  It is big and did not seem to be used to it's potential.  I thought it had to be very valuable land for redevelopment.

How much will this land right on High Street sell for?  The the interim executive director of the The United Methodist Children’s Home is quoted in the Columbus Dispatch saying he's been told  a value of "$8 million to $10 million."

Land for sale in Worthington

According to the Columbus Dispatch article the United Methodist Children’s Home land is 38 acres.  The land on High St. is surrounded by residential areas, Worthington Estates and Worthingway.

How prime is this prime property? The October 12, 2011 Columbus Dispatch article written by Dean Narciso also says: “Having the (nearby I-270) interchange greatly enhances the property,” said Robert Weiler, chairman of the Weiler Co., a local developer. “I would consider it one of the best addresses in the county. Even in this market, you’re going to have a lot of interest.”

The Worthington Comprehensive plan allows for commercial or residential development of the property.

Edit The UMCH building pictured is the Administration Building on October 14, 2011.

Worthington won

City of Worthington signIn a poll in The Other Paper, which was called 'This, That or The Other', Worthington won.  It was in the category of Places,  Worthington vs. Upper Arlington and Worthington won.

People could have voted for another place (The Other), a write in for example for Westerville or Dublin or Massey's Pizza...The Other Paper said someone wrote in Massey's Pizza often and despite the category?  Massey's Pizza is a PLACE isn't it?  A number of places.   Not sure it got written in for suburb type places though like Worthington and Upper Arlington.

Worthington got one of the longest write ups of any of the winners in any of the contests but it says it  was a close "race."

From  Take That!

"The race between Worthington and Upper Arlington was the closest in the This, That or the Other poll’s “Places” category. UA lost to Worthington by 6 percentage points.

Founded in 1803, historic downtown Worthington remains home to a thriving business and cultural scene. Summer nights find the street’s patios packed—with restaurant and bar goers lounging at Irish Pub PK O’Ryan’s, local wine shop House Wine, La Chatelaine or Old Bag of Nails. High schoolers and little league teams congregate at Graeter’s ice cream shop.

Today, the original downtown quarter is complemented by a number of distinct neighborhoods ranging from the idyllic post-World-War II single family homes nestled in Colonial Hills to the modern masterpieces in the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Rush Creek neighborhood.

None of this is to suggest hat (that?)  Upper Arlington lacks character or history—but to the suburban victor go the media spoils."

Worthington won - Other places

The Short North beat Grandview, German Village beat Clintonville and Goodale Park beat Schiller Park.

There were lots of other 'This, That or The Other' polls... people, radio stations, theaters, businesses, restaurants, bars, pizzas,  burgers.  Channel 10's Chuck Strickler won in a contest betwenn Cabot Rea and Jerry Revish.  Chuck Strickler got the most write in votes in the poll.

Graeter's beat Jeni's?

I love Graeter's and Worthington does not have a Jeni's but every suburb should.

The results of the polls were in the August 20, 2009 edition of The Other Paper.   I saw the poll did not take it.  Not sure why.

Worthington news now is about food

In a much earlier post, Worthington Ohio  I wrote  "What's happening in Worthington now?  There are two weekly papers to keep you up to date, as well as the Columbus Dispatch. "  And added links to the two weekly papers that serve the Worthington area, This Week News and the Worthington News.

This week there's the usual news of sports, the seasonal news of graduation and summer starting and timely news about food...  each paper has a story about a food pantry.  A local food pantry will open this summer, there is a need in the Worthington area, and a Worthington school planted a garden to grow food and will donate it to a food pantry run by a near by Church, in the Brookside / Smoky Row area:

This Week News Worthington

"Brookside sows a garden in the schoolyard"

Worthington News

"Planners: Need for local food pantry is real"

Brookside Elementary School is located in Perry Township.   Smoky Row Brethern Church that the elementary's garden will benefit is in the City of Columbus.

The local Worthington food pantry will be on the grounds of the Methodist Children's Home in the City of Worthington, on North High Street. Referrals to the program will be through FirstLink.  The local food pantry is being developed by Healthy Worthington  Coalition

the Worthington News (SNP) article by Rosemary Kubera says " Food and cash donations may be dropped off Saturday mornings at the Food for Families table, staffed by Healthy Worthington at the Farmers Market along High Street.

Volunteers are needed to staff the pantry, take registrations, pick up donations and package food, among other jobs."

Worthington's Chicken Leash Law

When Dawn in Hudson Ohio (NE Ohio) wrote of her "Urgent! Your Input Needed!""I have a lovely family that needs to move into a larger home. They would like a property where they can raise chickens!

Worthington Municipal Bldg 6500 N. High St. Worthington Ohio 43085

I thought the problem was the chickens.

I remember seeing chickens on a street corner on the west side of Columbus a couple of years ago.

I have chickens on the brain. There was a chicken incident in a Worthington Ohio neighborhood recently.   I am just barely aware of the chicken incident.  A Worthington resident has pet chickens?  A neighbor's dog attacked a pet chicken?  There is a sentence in a recent article in the Worthington version of ThisWeek Worthington, it is at the end of an important article about the rezoning of the Kilbourne Building on the Village Green in Worthington.

The sentence about city council says a Worthington resident suggested  "that council permit a limited number of chickens to be raised in the city, that a leash law for the control of dogs be considered, and that the city study how solar panels can be incorporated into homes and schools."

Of course the sentence clearly states the legalization of chickens and dog leash laws in the City of Worthington are two separate issues... before the city council...  somehow I managed to not get the solar panel proposal all mixed into it.

Since reading that sentence when I see or hear the word chicken I keep puzzling over what it said about chickens and leashes in the article about Worthington...

I had a listing in Sharon Township (Worthington School District) with chickens... a chicken coop, eggs... (old chickens became roasting chicken's)  a number of years ago.   Big lot, secluded, but hemmed in with houses in the city of Columbus, also in the Worthington City School District behind.    I wonder when I drive by on Olentangy River Road if the current owners still have the  chickens.  Or descendants of the seller's chickens.  I thought when we listed the house that the sellers were excluding the chickens but it seemed when it came right down to it moving chickens was not a good option.  They were NOT pet chickens.   They were raised for their eggs.

What next cows grazing on the Village Green in Worthington?

Winter Wickedness in Worthington

Winter Wickedness at the Worthinton Holiday Inn runs through tonight but I believe it is sold out already... if you are so inclined.

Dean Narciso wrote about "the festival" for the Columbus Dispatch:  Columbus Dispatch:  Winter Wickedness Perversion Fest draws heat

I first  saw something about it on the news last night on Channel 10...  I must not have been paying much attention... maybe half asleep?  I thought "Is that Worthington?" When I heard Worthington I tried to tell myself it was at a Holiday Inn in the Crosswoods area (City of Columbus), not the Holiday Inn in Worthington.

Channel 10 News: Churches Protest Sexual Festival At Hotel says:

"Paper and trash bags covered the doors and windows of the hotel during the event"

Wonder how the church groups even knew about the event?  Wonder why they chose Worthington. Worthington is one of the most traditional looking  communities in Central Ohio.  Worthington with it's brick colonial structures lining High Street seems like an odd place for a "Sexual Festival."

Not that I would venture to name another Central Ohio suburb as more suitable... for a "Sexual Festival."

The church groups got the Columbus Health Department involved.  The Columbus Health Department covers the City of Worthington as well as Columbus.

Winter Wickedness was Friday and Saturday night.

My office is kitty corner from the Holiday Inn on High Street in Worthington.  I drove by a few times yesterday, clueless.
