Columbus Ohio 43085 ZIP code

stamp of 43085 ZIP codeA ZIP code is a mail route... the image here is an approximation of the   43085 ZIP code.  The purple on the stamp shows the 43085 ZIP code.

Worthington Ohio a city and suburb of Columbus is in the 43085 ZIP code... 43085 is the Worthington Ohio ZIP code.

I believe the whole city of Worthington is in the 43085 ZIP code but not all of the 43085 ZIP code is in the City of Worthington.  The kinda sorta rectangular blob at the top of the purple area on the stamp is mostly in the City of Columbus... I believe there's an itty bitty part of Sharon Township in the 43085 ZIP code too.

Not all of the Worthington School District is in the  ZIP code.

Why would I even think about the shape of a ZIP code?   Someone ended up on one of my real estate blogs looking for the shape of the 43085 ZIP code, a novel search on Google....

The western edge of the ZIP code is partly in the City of Columbus and partly in the City of Worthington and there may be even some properties there that are not annexed into either city, still in a township.... Sharon Township I believe...

Oh and then there's the Village of Riverlea in the 43085 ZIP code too....

City of Worthington neigborhoods include: Colonial Hills, Davis Estate, Kilbourne Village, Old Worthington, Olentangy Hills, Rush Creek, Potters Creek, Wilson Hill, Worthington Estates and  Worthingway to name a few...well actually I guess more than a few neighborhoods

City of Columbus neighborhoods in the 43085 ZIP code include, Deer Creek (or is it Deercreek?) Ravines at Deercreek, Ravines At Worthington, The Sanctuary,The Village at Worthington, Westworth Village,   Worthington Park (there is a neighborhood in the City of Worthington called worthington Park too... or the legal description of some homes are Worthington Park), Worthington Woods,  Worthington Trace and probably more....

Kilbourne Village

Kilbourne Village is just west of Old Worthington.  I believe  the land  where Kilbourne Village homes stand today would have been farm fields for early Worthington settlers.

Yep. According to the Worthington site the subdivision was built in 1957 to 1960 and was previously the Episcopal Church farm lot.  Worthington.org history of neighborhoods.

There must have been some empty lots.

Great location walk to schools, pool, Old Worthington and parks.  The Kilbourne Village Walk Score...

Worthington's Worthingway

"Location, location, location" is one of the best descriptions of the Worthingway neighborhood in Worthington Ohio . I've anchored the Google map here on Masefield Street the farthest west street in Worthingway.  The south end of the Worthingway neighborhood is Highgate which backs to Medick Estates.

Worthingway is a pretty location.  Tucked back off of High Street but a lot of the appeal of the neighborhood that was built in the 1960's has for buyers and long term owners is the convenience to schools, Old Worthington, parks, the bike path and more.

Over the past couple of years most of the listings in the Columbus Board of Realtors multiple listing service say "location, location, location" in various ways:

"Across from the Parklands! 1 of Worthington's best locations. Walk to schools, busline, shopping & bike path. "

"Great location w/walking distance to schools K-12"

"Backs up to park and Olentangy bike trails."

"A must see in this sought after neighborhood!!"

"walls of windows that look out onto a private bird sanctuary."

"Wonderful location!"

"Close to schools, parks, shops, uptown area!"

"Fantastic Location"

"STEPS FROM THE BIKE PATH AND WORTHINGTON SCHOOLS!"

Yes that last REALTOR® was screaming (all caps)  she was so excited about the Worthingway home's location.  She also had a typo which I corrected... unless there is a BIKE BATH near by.

Worthington's Rush Creek Village

The historic style brought to mind by Worthington is usually "colonial" or "colonial revival." Yet Worthington home to Rush Creek Village has a large neighborhood of mid-century modern homes.  The homes in Rush Creek Village were built in the Usonian style reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright.  The Rush Creek Village homes were designed by Theodore Van Fossen and built by Richard Wakefield.

Rush Creek Village is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Rush Creek homes are distinctive with cinder block walls, flat roofs, no garages.

A New York Times Article, (here in the  San Diego Union Tribune) from 2004 subtitled "Little-known Rush Creek quietly survives 50 years, a testament to the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright" says of the Westbrook family  in 1987:

"There, in Rush Creek Village, they found a near perfect relic of mid-century Usonian design, a split-level dominated by ribbon windows, board-and-batten siding, and earthy cypress fascias in strong horizontal lines. At $210,000 for 1,900 square feet, the house was not only reasonably priced, but also spectacularly sited on a one-plus-acre hilly lot."

The article written by Florence Williams is titled "Secret subdivision"  announcing to the rest of the world of the presence of Rush Creek Village in Worthington Ohio.

Although the article says most Rush Creek homes are about 2000 square feet and that Westbrook's home is 1900 sqaure feet that seems large to me for a Rush Creek home.  Or maybe I have only seen the little ones.

There are other Frank Lloyd Wright inspired homes sprinkled around Central Ohio, some designed by Van Fossen.

Mid-Century Style

Worthington home Mid Century corner windowsThere are great websites and magazines about  "Mid-Century Modern", the "Mid-Century Marvels", the "Atomic Ranch", etc.

Another site I recently found Mid-Century Style says this:

"Welcome to Mid-Century Style, where we celebrate the architecture of the 1950's. Not just the modern, but also just the regular middle class blond brick ranches and frame residential homes."

Look at this bathroom - Mid-Century Style Blog - Updates! Check Out This Bathroom an earlier post about these Denver Colorado fixtures looking for a home says:

“We bought a 1958 turquoise bathtub/sink/toilet a while back to remodel our own bathroom, since then things have changed and we’ll be moving out so we need to get rid of the blue bathroom."

That's no ordinary blue that's  1950's turquise!

Mid 20th century homes, the kind of ordinary homes you find all over Central Ohio including Worthington neighborhoods like Colonial Hills, Davis Estate and Wilson Hill.

You can follow Mid-Century Style via Facebook (I'm a fan) and they have a page on Ning.com too...

Worthington's Davis Estate (most of Davis Estate was built in the late 1940's.)

Worthington's Colonial Hills - A History

Colonial Hills Orignal 1927 PlatThe first section of Colonial Hills was platted in the 1920's.  The first section of Colonial Hills was built in the 1940s.

Colonial Hills  was not in the Village of Worthington when it was platted or built, it was in an unincorporated area.  Colonial Hills was built as a rental community for executives at a defense plant near the Columbus Airport.

The Worthington Historical Society's Neighborhoods says the neighborhood was built in 1927 to 1941 by "WWII Defense Homes Corp"  I think it was Defense Homes Corporation and they were built during WWII.  Defense Homes Corporation became part of FHA in the 1940s.

The plat maps and a lot of what I know about the history of Colonial Hills is  from the entry about Colonial Hills on Wikipedia written by George Campbell a Worthington / Columbus historian which says "Colonial Hills was built in an assembly line fashion that predated Levittown by five years."  I knew there was a defense plant and that was why the houses were built but I did not know a lot of the details prior to reading the history on Wikipedia.  Colonial Hills 1941 Plat

There were nine styles of homes that were built "prefab" elseswhere and delivered to Central Ohio. The 1941 Plat was built first.

Colonial Hills had alleys when it was platted and built.  The alleys in Colonial Hills were vacated, divided and deeded to the homeowners at some point.   The homes in Colonial Hills were sold after the Second World War, many to investors so many homes remained rental property for many more years.

Today Colonial Hills is a thriving Worthington Ohio neighborhood.

Image credit both images, 1927 Plat and 1941 Plat are from George C. Campbell and according to Wikipedia are in the public domain.  "This work has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder. This applies worldwide."
