Worthington Trick-or-Treat 2011

Worthington Trick-or-Treat 2011 is Halloween, October 31, 2011

Best 'witches this Halloween - Real Living ecard Discover Columbus Ohio has Trick-or-Treat 2011 info for Columbus Ohio and it's suburbs including Worthington.  The post says:

"Trick -or -Treat 2011 or Beggars Night 2011 is on Halloween.   In "Beggars Night date moves again" in the Columbus Dispatch back in 2009, Debbie Gebolys looked into the future and told us what was going to happen in Central Ohio in 2011.

"So trick-or-treat is Oct. 31 as long as it's a weekday. If Halloween falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, go out on the Thursday before Halloween.

That puts Beggars Night on Oct. 29 this year, Oct. 28 next year and on Oct. 31 in 2011."

For many years Beggars Night (or Beggar's Night?, the night belongs to beggars? ) or "Tick-or-Treat" was not on Halloween in many Columbus area communities.    MORPC changed all that back in 2005.  I believe the quote above is the rule of thumb for determining when Trick-or Treat will occur.  Not all communities follow MORPC's advice about when to hold Trick-or-Treat.  With Halloweek falling on a Monday this year, everyone will be Trick-or-Treating at the same night.   Won't they?"

Halloweek?  I think I meant Halloween....  Monday is Halloween.   Worthington like most Central Ohio communities has Trick-or-Treat on Halloween.

The official Worthington site (Worthington.org) says:

"Trick-or-treat takes place on Halloween night in the City of Worthington, October 31st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m."

Double check with the Worthington website if you do not believe me....  seeing this on WorthingtonOldandNews.com?  See the Worthington link in the right sidebar?  That is the City of Worthington, Worthington.org

Worthington:  Have you seen the ghost of Tom?

Have you seen the ghost of Tom?

Long white bones and the rest is gone?

There are lots of versions of the song on YouTube.

Did you learn the song as John?  Or Tom?

I think I learned the song as "Tom."  I am going with the ghost of Tom because Worthington is named after Thomas Worthington.  Thomas Worthington was  the Governor of Ohio when settlers from New England founded Worthington.  I believe Thomas Worthington never visited Worthington...  Thomas Worthington was in Chillicothe, the state capital and a more settled and sophisticated part of Ohio at the time.

Worthington: Have you seen the ghost of Tom... er I mean John?

Here's one version of the classic song. They do the second verse different than me too. No John or Tom is NOT standing on the banks of the Olentangy River... he is in downtown Columbus, just south of the confluence of the Olentangy and the Scioto at the Santa Maria, of course.

On one version of the song on YouTube, someone commented with an idea which plagued me as a child.

"Ghost is different from skeleton, right?"

but really what rhymes with skeleton?

Worthington's BEST neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat

Worthington is one of two Franklin County communities that did NOT Trick-or-Treat Thursday. Worthington and Grandview Heights and some Southern Delaware County communities are having Trick-or-Treat on Sunday, Halloween.

Zillow did an index of the BEST neighborhoods to Trick-or-Treat for some US cities, Atlanta, San Diego, Los Angeles. Zillow did not do Columbus, in Central Ohio, but if Zillow did I would think some Worthington neighborhoods would rank high for Best Neighborhoods for "Trick-or-Treat" in the Columbus area.

What are the BEST Worthington neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat?

Happy Halloween

Is Zillow better at predicting ‘Trick-or-Treat” loot than they are with home values? How do they do it?

From the Zillow Blog:

“There is a common belief that wealthy neighborhoods are the Holy Grail for harvesting the most Halloween candy. However, to provide a more holistic approach to trick-or-treating, the Zillow Trick-or-Treat Housing Index was calculated using four equally weighted data variables: Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI), population density, Walk Score and local crime data from Relocation Essentials. Based on those variables, the Index represents neighborhoods that will provide the most candy, with the least walking and safety risks.”

Best Worthington neighborhoods for ‘Trick-or-Treat” based on Zillow + Walk Score + crime data. I am unfamiliar with Relocation Essentials. The online resource for crime data I am familiar with has only City of Columbus data, none of the suburbs, no Worthington data. Or did not have anything other than Columbus data, the last time I looked.

BEST Worthington neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat?

Perhaps a stab in the dark based on knowing the Worthington neighborhoods? Which Worthington neighborhoods are the BEST for Trick-or-Treat?

Old Worthington because surely some of those old houses have got to be haunted? Haunted has to add to the ambiance but do they give good treats?

Worthington Estates because it seems like lots of kids live there?

Medick Estates? They can afford good candy but those lots are huge, probably does not get as good a "Walk Score" as some Worthington neighborhoods.

Colonial Hills back in the 50s and 60s Colonial Hills would have been the neighborhood to live in for Trick-or-Treat. Maybe even back in the beginning in the 1940s. Families, friendly (the sign says so), small lots get a lotta Halloween loot quick.

Worthington Ghost Tours - 2010

Worthington ghost tours 2010

Worthington ghost tours

Is Worthington haunted?  Or just historical?  Are there good ghost stories about any Worthington buildings?

The Old Rectory?

The Orange Johnson House?

Sharon Hall?

The Kilbourne Building*?

The Worthington Inn, now there is a roofline that says spooky tale to me.

Snow House?

Was the Packard Annex haunted?  Were there haunted houses there in the 1990s?  I think I volunteered to work at one once  to work at one once but did not for some reason.  Maybe I got sick.... or chickened out?

Any haunted private residences in Worthington?

Worthington is old.  Or older than a lot of Central Ohio and a lot of the old is still there... it's been maintained.  Worthington Ohio was settled in 1803.

The Worthington Historical Society Ghost Tours are Friday October 22, 2010.  There are two tours.  Tickets are available at The Old Rectory and Fritzy Jacobs.

The sign on the Worthington Village Green says "Under the light of a full moon"

Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus places

* I thinks since the Kilbourne Building was a library first, there ought to be a haunted library story.  Or do haunted stories harm a place? Would a fun scary story hurt or enhance the Kilbourne Building in your opinion?

Worthington ghosts - The Worthington Medical College

Worthington ghosts....  Worthington had a medical college!

This is true Worthington history, not a ghost story.  A plaque on the front of the Kilbourne Building says "Near this site was establish in December 1830 as a part of Worthington College the first Eclectic Medical College in the Middle West.  This tablet commemorates the faculty and students of this college who by reason of their endeavors were able to alleviate in some measure the suffering of humanity."

The plaque on the Kilbourne Building was dedicated in June 1953. The memorial plaque was from the National Eclectic Medical Association.

This is a Worthington ghost story based on the history of the Worthington Medical College...

The Tale of Dr. Morrow from the Worthington Public Library was made in 2007 about the Worthington Medical College.

The  Worthington Memory site has  a wealth of information about the history of Worthington. Worthington Memory was a joint project of the Worthington Historical Society and the Worthington Library for the Worthington Bicentennial Celebration in 2003.

Beggars' Night in Central Ohio, it's back...

Cemetary Lane sign

"Beggars Night, or more properly Beggars' Night, is a regional term for the Halloween-related activity that is referred to in most parts of the United States as "Trick or Treat". Specifically, the term is broadly but not exclusively used in Ohio, and in many parts of Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and western New York. " is a quote from Wikipedia. The entry is dated October 2, 2010 and could obviously change...   I broke links to all the Wikipedia articles for the states and for Halloween and Trick or Treat.

Wikipedia:  "Beggars Night"

The term is broadly used in Ohio?  I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee Wisconsin and we did Beggars' Night there too, traditionally the night before Halloween.... Beggars' Night is usually the night before Halloween.*  It is the night for "Trick or Treating."  Other traditions have Devils Night the day before Halloween.  Or Mischief Night...

I was looking for an old Columbus Dispatch article about an older Halloween party which was the reason that Columbus did "Beggars' Night" before Halloween when I found the Wikipedia article about Beggars Night.

The 2005 Columbus Dispatch had an article written by Debbie Gebolys titled  "Holiday, Halloween in sync this year"  and was subtitled "Beggars Night will end in much of central Ohio"

Beggars' Night... it's back!  Central Ohio 'Trick or Treat' 2010*

The 2005 Columbus Dispatch article said:

"Beggars Night, which could fall as many as four days before Halloween, was started in Columbus at least 90 years ago, originally because a Downtown community party was held on Oct. 31. But the party got too rowdy, according to newspaper accounts, and Columbus police halted it in 1954."

So Beggars Night is an old tradition, from the late 1800's. We are no longer in sync with Halloween in Central Ohio.  MORPC suggested Thursday as the day for "Trick or Treat" or "Beggar's Night" based on safety.

Lists of "Trick or Treat"  days and times are on Channel 4 and Channel 10's sites as well as links to HighBall Halloween in the Short North.  The Shamrock Club in Columbus has a Halloween celebration...  There are a lot of haunted houses in Central Ohio...  ExperienceColumbus.com is always a great place to find things to do.
