the history of the Morse - Bethel Connector

A site called 'Neighborhood Link' has a good read about the history of the Morse -  Bethel Connector.   The  Morse - Bethel Connector would have been a road connecting Clintonville to the Bethel Road area,  a bridge across the Olentangy River....

Neighborhood Link -  Clintonville Area Commission - Morse -  Bethel Connector says:

" For over three decades, there has been debate about building a bridge over the Olentangy River to connect Morse and Bethel roads. Morse Road is located in the northern portion of Clintonville. Morse Road is located within District 7, 8 and 9 of the Clintonville Area Commission."

Originally proposed in 1968!

Slide the map to the west if you need to... Bethel Road ends at 315 and the Olentangy River. Morse Rd. ends at High Street.

In the 1990's the Morse - Bethel Connector was proposed to go through Graceland Shopping Center.  With the redevelopment of Graceland... that did not happen.

Rathbone Road was the other place mentioned.  Rathbone Road is the southernmost street in the Delawanda Park neighborhood.  Rathbone Road is the street north of Old Beechwold.

It is interesting to think of how different Columbus would be today if the Morse - Bethel Connector had been built, in the 1960's or the 1990s.

The east west roads that cross the Olentangy are Dublin Granville Rd in Worthington (161) and Henderson and W. North Broadway in Clintonville. Last year W. Henderson Road was out of commission, along with 315 being under construction.  Not so easy to get around.  This years construction on 315 seems mild in comparison.

The Delawanda

Delawanda Park and RideThe Delawanda was where the Delawanda Park and Ride is today.  The Delawanda was a "tea-room" in the late 20s and early 1930s.  The Delawanda would have been in an unincorporated area, Sharon Township back in the 1920s and 1930s, north of Columbus.  The Delawanda had a Worthington address, the Village of Worthington would have been closer than a Columbus post office at the time?  It makes me wonder if Old Beechwold had a Worthington address in the 1920s and 1930s. The park and ride is north of Rathbone Rd. The Old Beechwold neighborhood is just south of Rathbone Rd.

There is a photo of The Delawanda with family members standing out front on Bleimes Flickr photostream, a collection of family photos.

The Delawanda - Worthington, Ohio

Bleimes on Flickr (a grand daughter of the 5 year old in the photo of The Delawanda with family members out front on High Street) r identifies those in the photo as:

"George R Bleimes, George Bleimes 5, Arko von Ritterschloss (dog), William "Billy" McCarty."  and the building behind them as  "Delawanda Tea Room, Worthington, Ohio. ca 1929. "

The family history by George Bleimes (the 5 year old boy in the photo) says:

"About 1927 mother and grandmother opened a dining establishment in our house that they called a “tea-room” and named it The Delawanda. Seating for customers was in the three front rooms. They had a 12’ X 20’ room added to the back for a kitchen and a first floor lavatory installed."

The Bleimes family history shows the same photo as the one on Flickr, with the family standing in front, with the 'The Delawanda'  sign.  Also another photo straight on and closer up, the first photo in the history shows the house at 4939 N. High St. which was "The Delawanda" a tea-room.
